Start Your Podcast with The Podcast Starter Kit

When I was in grammar school my 2nd Grade teacher, Ms, McCullough,  came up to me and asked if I wanted to be in something called, “Drama Club.” I had no idea what that was, but she insisted that it would be fun and I’d be really good at it; I agreed, and we called my mom to get permission.

It turns out Drama Club was both fun, and I was good at it. My first role was a munchkin in The Wizard of Oz (I was very short). I stuck with Drama all throughout grammar and high school, ending my run in college. But it’s something that shaped me and something that I loved to do. I miss it a lot some days and feel part of the reason I love to teach and speak publicly is that it has the feeling of performing. There’s something else that I do that helps me ‘perform’: podcasting.

Above you’ll see a video of my podcasting setup (I have a podcast! You should check it out). I created it in conjunction with a book my friend Matt and I wrote which came out last week called, The Podcast Starter Kit.

Getting Your Questions Answered

In the last few years, podcasting has grown considerably in popularity due in part to shows like Serial, Lore, and Crime Town. The barrier of entry has also gotten a lot lower as home recording equipment has gotten more affordable and easier to setup. However, for those who do want to start their own podcast, there are still a lot of questions that need answers. Questions like:

  • What microphone should I get?
  • How long should my show be?
  • How do I get sponsors?

…and more. Luckily, The Podcast Starter Kit tells you everything you need to know!

Why Podcast?

There are a lot of great reasons to start a podcast. Aside from the fact that it’s fun to do, several professional benefits to podcasting are you can:

  • Establish yourself as an authority in your field.
  • Deliver your content in a different way than just blogging.
  • Interview guests and share insight, as well as learn from them.
  • Make money doing it.

Start Your Show

I’m eternally grateful to Ms. McCullough for giving me that push in the right direction; it’s help shaped the personal I am today. And while I don’t get to be on stage and act anymore, I still have a couple of outlets to perform. Podcasting is one of those outlets, and I encourage everyone to try it.

Matt and I wrote the book because we get a lot of questions about podcasting, we love podcasting and want people to have an easier time starting up than we did. If you’ve given even the slightest bit of thought to starting a podcast, you should buy the book. It will give you the push you need, then tell you how to start.

Using Podcast Sponsorships To Replace Event Sponsorships

This may seem a little bit like news jacking, but it is something I’ve been thinking about over the last week. With the amount in-person events being cancelled or going online due to COVID-19, is there another good outlet for brands to reach new customers? While digital events are the next likely option, I think…
